Working exclusively in charcoal, I use my sculptor’s awareness of three-dimensional form to commit the essential qualities of my subjects to paper. The portraits are wonderfully expressive in range and tone, capturing both the looks and character of each individual dog.
It all began one day whilst dog-sitting for my dad. It was raining and Charlie refused to go out for a walk favouring the comfort of his bed. To pass the time I started drawing him. Then friends asked me to draw their hounds and it’s grown & grown from there.
Dogs are amazingly engaging. They show themselves so honestly, so expressive from ears to tail. Who they are & how they feel. When I draw their portraits I draw the character, the mood, the feeling, that lies beneath their features.
